Norman to answer USPGA by Friday
Greg Norman has until Friday to inform the USPGA whether he will accept their invitation to the 2008 PGA Championship. The Shark made news headlines last week when he led the Open Championship for two rounds before losing the lead in a 4th round meltdown.
However, with television executives desperate to boost plummeting ratings, Norman is hot property. Golf fans the world over are keen to see how the former champion will perform at the year’s final major.
Norman has given no indication that he will repeat his feats at Royal Birkdale once he returns to the PGA Championship, having carded a mediocre round of 75 day on the first day of 2008 Senior Open Championship.
In Norman’s defence, the 2008 Senior PGA Open is being hosted at Royal Troon, with wind making any sort of low score a rarity on a day that saw Tom Watson card a round of 70 to take the lead.
“In all the times I’ve played Troon I’ve never really played the golf course in this wind before,” Norman told the Guardian. “It was an interesting adjustment for me and I just didn’t capture the course quickly enough. To tell you the truth, I didn’t feel a lot of confidence over my tee-shots.”
