Greg Norman invited to 2008 PGA Championship

The organisers of the PGA Championship are desperately seeking star power in the run up to the year’s final major. With Tiger Woods absent due to injury, there are concerns that both attendances and ratings will plummet at the season finale.

Bring on Greg Norman. The 53 year old Australian caused a sensation at the 2008 Open Championship by defying horrific conditions and the talents of some of the most gifted golfers in the world to lead the tournament for 2 rounds.

While the aged golfer eventually finished the tournament tied for 3rd place after a characteristic meltdown on the final day, his performance was the story of the championship and propelled Norman into the golf spotlight.

“I’m hoping we can get him to play here,” PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka said  on Monday. “He would be a special invitation. We’re going to talk about that this week with our executive committee that approves those invitations. (There are) a handful.”

Norman has been noncomittal about his prospects of playing in another major. The Australian had planned to compete in the Senior British Open and the US Senior Open before taking a prolonged break from golf.
